On 1 June – Children’s Day, a colourful celebration dedicated to children, nature, the White Stork, and environmental protection took place in Belozem. The event combined creativity, music, educational topics, and open-air cinema, bringing together young and older friends of nature in one of the most emblematic settlements for the White Stork in Bulgaria.
The celebration was held on the eve of World Environment Day – 5 June, and was part of the activities under the project “Green Class Beyond the Classroom: The Young Explorers of Belozem”. The initiative aims to encourage children’s curiosity about nature through experience, play, creativity, and observation of the environment around them.
The programme began with the creative activity “My Little Stork from Belozem”, during which the youngest participants coloured specially prepared drawings of young storks and had the opportunity to create their own colourful little stork. The festive mood then continued with a children’s disco, songs, and dances for all young participants. The evening concluded with open-air cinema – a screening of suitable children’s and educational films related to nature, birds, storks, and environmental protection. In this way, the children had the opportunity not only to have fun, but also to learn more about the nature around them and the need to protect it.
As part of the event, the topic “Climate Change and Its Impact on Storks in the Belozem Area – the European Stork Village in Bulgaria” was also presented, as part of the Climathon initiative implemented by the Agrarian University – Plovdiv within the ARCADIA project. The focus was placed on climate change, the signals that nature sends us, and the importance of environmental protection.
The event was jointly organised by Green Balkans, Community Center “Prosveta 1909” – Belozem, Belozem Mayoralty, and the Agrarian University – Plovdiv. It was implemented with the support of EuroNatur and Manfred-Hermsen-Stiftung, and in the context of the messages of World Environment Day 2026, dedicated to climate change and the need for a more sustainable future.
The celebration left behind many smiles, colourful little storks, dances, and shared moments under the open sky – with the message that caring for nature can be knowledge, experience, and joy at the same time.
